What’s a literary journal for?

As the editor of Griffith Review, I find myself answering versions of this question again and again: in funding applications, in university paperwork, in newsletters to subscribers, in emails to past and potential donors, in Zoom calls about the tattered state of the literary sector, in conversations with an old colleague when she asks me what I do for a living these days.
