Embracing the Ordinary

Courtney Powell

Reviewed: Plain Life: On thinking, feeling and deciding, Antonia Pont, NewSouth Publishing

What makes a plain life? And what does it take to try and live one? Through queries, experiments and provocations, scholar and author Antonia Pont contemplates ‘plainness’ and the conditions through which we might find it, reflecting on the teachings of significant philosophers to reevaluate the ways we think, feel and determine the shape of our lives. Yet Pont’s intentions are clear from the start: this is not a self-help book—a plain life is not defined by a set of rules or mimicable practices, but is something we must decide for ourselves.
