the sky swallowed the moon
& left the stars
like bright crumbs on a black
at sunset it had quivered
like an honesty pod
floating on a pink & blue pool.
as i watched, the earth’s shadow
lifted like a flat cloud
& the sky was whole again.
sunset wears you like a jumper
& in the shower
you sing the blues
this noisy house creaks & moans
every wall heaves & sighs
the windows rattle
like ghosts in the wind.
a fleet of bicycles
is moored in the harbour of the hall
open the back door slowly
it’s a sound effect from transylvania
dracula winks behind the cracked louvre.
sometimes the tv stays
on for days until the soft core schmalz
bores thru & drives the impulse
to turn it off
Christmas carols in a chorus
of three voices turns the neighbour
off his cursing of dogs & donkeys
sounds almost normal after a while.
the house trembles paper rustles
in the breeze pink rosebuds drink
from a jar on the kitchen table
& i think about you
making perfect melon balls
while the roof roared under the rain.
when you’re here it’s instant party
i could dance sometimes
you’re welcome as the summer rain.
the eclipse lasted until the shadow
lifted like tides & seasons
we women are geared to the cycle
of the sky.
i won’t see you for a long time
so enjoy the view of the harbour
from the ferry in sydney the buildings
are taller & the houses smaller
we adjust to fit
the available space.
