Duel

Nathan Curnow

Volume 74, Number 2, 2015

waking again with their hands around their throats
they haven’t figured out what love is
she’s wrapped in bed clothes and he’s in a suit
unlocking the patio doors
kangaroos in the valley for the very first time
means nothing which means so much
a sodden joint in the ashtray on the photo album
the family snaps on the lake in the raft
she’s rolling another as he loads the shots
the pistols and their timeless design
their end of life coordinator advises against it
preferring pills and a spritz with lemon
an epic finale to a thinning marriage
it’s taken courage to lie this long
burning the certificate was a real high point
the party balloons have been euthanased
time to play the recording of their favourite actor
whom they hired to count to ten
intoning the derelict upwelling of the world
the last text is too much for her thumb
pressed back to back like every night in bed
NFR in black texta on their brows
agreeing that the view was their saving grace
the hills and the breaking bound
