Melbourne University Publishing (MUP) announced on 4 September 2025 that Meanjin will cease publication after its final edition in December 2025. For questions related to the impact of that announcement, please see below.
Custodianship of Meanjin was transferred to QUT in Brisbane in February 2026. Publishing will resume online and in print from the second half of 2026.
Will the Meanjin archives be safe from AI developers during the transfer?
MUP takes seriously the issue of copyright and AI. At present, the subscriber paywall works as a security defence against ill-intentioned search engines or scrapers. Through 2025, MUP worked to investigate all Digital Rights Management (DRM) options and up-to-date protocols for enhanced protection of published works. It was their plan to use the time between the announcement of Meanjin‘s closure, in September 2025, and February of the following year to ensure all arrangements were in line with industry best practice and to liaise with authors before finalising arrangements.

Will I still receive copies of Meanjin from QUT if I held a subscription through MUP?
You will need to resubscribe for Brisbane-based editions of Meanjin. The first edition, Meanjin 85.1 (Summer 2026) will be available in December.
Do I still have access to the Meanjin website and online archives?
Yes, if you currently have access to the subscriber-only areas of this website, this will continue until 28 February 2026.
Should I have received a refund from MUP if I had outstanding editions in my subscriptions?
As of 10 February 2026, MUP has processed all refund requests that included complete, accurate subscriber information.
