A white horse biting the sky

Bethany Lalor

Summer 2024

It was me that found the place. Big Steve from down the road told my dad he’d give me twenty bucks to clear out his boat shed, haul a few boxes in and out of his car. He reckoned his missus was gonna sell it whether she had the right to or not, and he didn’t want to lose what was stored. It was all junk, close as I could tell.

The boxes were heavy and it wasn’t worth the $20 but I liked Steve well enough that I did it anyway. The first trip he walked beside me in the same purple tracksuit he always wore, gave me a cigarette out the back of his house. We stacked the boxes in an empty shed. He told me his dad won the boat shed in a card game the year he got married, that it was the only thing that stopped his mum leaving, because he had lost everything else. He’d skipped back a generation or two when I put the cigarette out and started back to the car. Some people talk long as you let them.
