The year in repair did not begin well, and geopolitical events unfolding at home and farther afield were only going to make it worse. Yet in the face of generalised disrepair, maintenance must continue its thankless work. Acts of mending will be slow and laborious—and when it comes to repairing our relations, diplomacy and great delicacy will be required. Moreover, acts of repair and reparation affect not only infrastructural systems and technical details but also the complex body that is the body politic: its diverse ambitions and desires, and its institutions. We need to resist the mere maintenance of the status quo; instead, we need to foster hopeful approaches to maintenance, repair and a feminist ethics of care.
