Some thoughts on the common toadstool (or, the intruder)

Ben Brooker

Winter 2024

In Adelaide’s Museum of Economic Botany, the charming centre-piece of the city’s Botanic Garden, is a display case containing 210 papier-mâché models of fungi made in the nineteenth century by Heinrich Arnoldi and Co in Gotha, Germany.

As far as I could tell on the cool winter’s afternoon I visited the museum, only one of these is a psychoactive mushroom: the fly agaric, or Amanita muscaria. If you’re not familiar with these names, you almost certainly know this mushroom by its appearance. With its crimson cap and white, irregularly shaped ‘warts’, it’s perhaps the most recognisable of all mushroom species, the fungal world’s equivalent of the charismatic megafauna that stand in for the whole of the animal kingdom.
