Slessor in Reply to Elliott

Kenneth Slessor

September, 1945

It is not my practice to review reviewers except on questions of accuracy. In his criticism of my One Hundred Poems (Meanjin Vol. 4, No. 2) Mr Brian Elliott publishes a number of inaccuracies which call for correction. I am not concerned with the associations, reminiscences and evocations which my verses may produce in Mr Elliott’s mind, but I am driven to retort when he alleges that certain passages in Five Bells are echoes of T. S. Eliot, G. M. Hopkins, C. J. Brennan and R. D. FitzGerald.

He remarks : ‘There is also Robert FitzGerald here, with’ the window… followed, as it happens, by some lines of reflection on the theme of memory. We meet then the phrase, “the talons of the rain”, which FitzGerald actually uses.’
