The recent appearance of Janine Burke’s biography of Sunday Reed, The Heart Garden, is the culmination of nearly thirty years of research that began with a Masters thesis in the late 1970s on the then little known artist Joy Hester. While also writing novels, Burke has returned regularly to researching the group of artists who collected around Sunday and John Reed’s home, Heide, editing a selection of letters between Joy Hester and Sunday Reed, and producing biographies of Joy Hester, Albert Tucker and now Sunday Reed.
