An Interview With Alice Munro

It would not be exaggerating to suggest that for many Canadians Alice Munro is a national treasure. Her eight books have been greeted with reviews that range from stating ‘She is our Chekhov’ to ‘One of the best short story writers alive’ (The Times, London), She has won Canada’s prestigious Governor General’s Award three limes, for Dance of the Happy Shades (1968), Who Do You Think You Are? (1978) and The Progress Of Love (1986), which was also selected as one of the best books of that year by the New York Times. Her other books include Lives of Girls and Women (1971), Something I’ve Been Meaning To Tell You (1976), The Moons Of Jupiter (1982), Friend Of My Youth (1990) and, most recently, Open Secrets (1994). She is a frequent contributor to the New Yorker, the Paris Review, and Atlantic Monthly.
