At Meanjin we are privileged to publish essays by some of Australia’s finest thinkers. Narrowing them down to this few finest has been a challenge. 2017 was an exceptional time for prophetic writing, with Raimond Gaita exploring the nature of truth in the age of Trump, and Mark Pesce probing the ramifications of AI and Facebook for a future under surveillance. Under a political lens, Shannon Burns offered us a stimulating and contentious interrogation of our understanding of Australia’s working class. In an intersection of the personal and cultural, Claire G. Coleman’s exposition on Indigenous connection to Country raised pertinent questions about who are the real nomads. Beyond these are many more acerbic pieces of commentary and insightful narratives, works exploring religion, society, race, the personal, the global.
