This poem from the Meanjin archives was first published in 1967.
We shared your promise many times
before you flowered in my flesh,
and through a thousand waiting days
you stayed a shadow and a wish.
There is a shining in my heart
that lights my gleaming, ribboned blood,
as circling in your secret nest,
you take its ruby stars for food.
I feel you stretch your groping hand
to touch my nearness as it moulds
your swelling smallness mindfully
in urgent tears my body holds.
O grasp our passionate gift of life.
Uncradle from my trembling blood.
Small mystery of flesh and seed,
let love be candle to life’s mood!
