Kristel Thornell and Lisa Lang win the Vogel!

September 18 2009 — JA

Meanjin would like extend a huge congratulations to Kristel Thornell who, along with Lisa Lang, was yesterday announced as the winner of the 2009 Australian/Vogel Literary Award.

The Vogel is one of Australia’s most prestigious awards for an unpublished manuscript by a writer under 35 years of age. Judges Cate Kennedy, Matt Rubinstein, Margo Lanagan and Geordie Williamson were equally impressed by both manuscripts and decided to announce joint winners, something that has only happened three times before in the Award’s history (Tim Winton was joint winner in 1981). Thornell will share in the $20 000 prize money and her novel, Night Street will be published by Allen & Unwin.

We are big fans of Thornell’s fiction and we’re sure she will go from strength to strength. In June, we published her short story ‘Leading Man’, which is a beautiful piece on love, disconnection and Bollywood heroes. You can read it on our editions page, here.

We’d also like to congratulate Georgia Blain, whose story ‘Intelligence Quotient’ has been selected for this year’s Best Australian Short Stories, to be published by Black Inc. in November.

Update: Overland also published Kristel.
