Go well, Ruby

February 18 2010 — Sophie Cunningham

It is terrible, terrible news that award-winning singer songwriter Ruby Hunter died overnight. She was 54. Our indigenous Australians die much much too young. It is a National disgrace - one I'm feeling all the more keenly today.

Ruby's voice was so deep that listening to her was sometimes like listening to the low rumbles of an earthquake. Moving and powerful. (You should buy and listen to her here). She met her husband, Archie Roach when they were both 16 and living on the streets - theirs was a long and productive union and our thoughts are with him.

Heartbreaking. Pure Earth that woman. Pulled out Looking for Butter Boy and played Djabugai Lady. Heartbreaking. Vale Ruby.

Re. "Our indigenous Australians die much much too young. It is a National disgrace." Yes they do, and yes it is. I didn't know a great deal of Ruby Hunter's work but for some reason her passing is resonating with me.
