World Matters on this Saturday

JA October 15

Just a reminder that the Diamond Valley Oxfam and Eltham Bookshop are hosting a wonderful celebration of new questions and fresh alternatives from October 17–19, and November 19. Here are just a few of the great events on (for more, please see the full program on our Noticeboard). The costs are $6 per session, $20 per day or $35 for the festival.

Memory

As part of the festival, Sian Prior, Maggie MacKellar and Carolyn Fraser will take part in a moving panel on history and memory, alongside Middle East scholar Ian Bickerton. The session, chaired by Sophie Cunningham, will draw on the themes of several essays in the September issue of Meanjin, from personal loss to cherished objects and the deaths of the Balibo Five.

When: Sat 17 October, 2-3pm

Where: Edendale Community Farm, Gastons Lane, Eltham. (Melway 22 A1)

Crisis

How do we distinguish between the critical crises of the time from the fake, the melodrama, the manipulation? What are the emerging landscapes that will move us towards sustainable lifestyles? Essayists Gideon Haigh, Robert Hillman and Hilary McPhee offer sharp and wise insights on the financial meltdown, bushfires and consumerism. Sponsored by Griffith Review.

When: Sat 17 October, from 10am

Where: Edendale Community Farm, Gastons Lane, Eltham. (Melway 22 A1)

Conflict

Why do we find it easier to go to war than to go to peace? What about the challenges of balancing justice, reconciliation and nation building after the end of a conflict? How can education nurture our talents for peace? Writers Kevin Foster (What are we doing in Afghanistan?), Jeff Sparrow (Killing) and Dr James Page (Peace Education) present a kaleidoscope of research, stories and personal experiences as they explore these questions.

When: Sat 17 Oct, 12.30-1.45pm

Where: Edendale Community Farm, Gastons Lane, Eltham. (Melway 22 A1)

Bookings are essential so for tickets, or information on other sessions, please contact the Eltham Bookshop on 03 9439 8700 or elthambookshop@bigpond.com.
