Spike Reader Poll: The Results

December 03

The ballots have been counted, the boxes ticked, and the results of the inaugural Spike reader poll are in! We received, in sum, a grand total of er…five votes…

But wait! We are not Marvin, the Paranoid Android from Hitchhiker’s Guide, to get all glum and woeful about this small pool of suggestions.

Instead, we are determined to post in celebration of the winner, as voted by you. Of course, as no book was voted for twice, that means it’s winners plural – seventeen to be exact. So it’s a case of cake and champers for everyone and mutual pats on the back. Here, in not particular order, are your number ones:

  • Diary of a Bad Year by J.M. Coetzee

  • The Time We Have Taken by Steven Carroll

  • Journey to the Stone Country by Alex Miller

  • The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas

  • The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

  • An Innocent Gentleman by Elizabeth Jolley

  • The Secret River by Kate Grenville

  • Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre

  • True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey

  • Surrender by Sonja Hartnett

  • Breath by Tim Winton

  • Carpentaria by Alexis Wright

  • The Silver Donkey by Sonya Hartnett

  • The Hamilton Case by Michelle de Kretser

  • The Boat by Nam Le

  • Truth by Peter Temple

And, on a literary parting note to end official Spike voting proceedings, here is a LOLcat courtesy of the genius cake-making eds at Alien Onion. Thanks to all the readers who voted - we hope you find some inspiration for summer reading hereabouts.
