Rubrication and Illumination

JA September 29

I love Typography has linked to some beautiful examples of rubrication and illumination, photographed by Eben Sorkin. Both terms refer to the medieval process of decorating manuscripts, which often involved elaborate and detailed embellishments around the capital letter at the beginning of a text. Strictly speaking, illumination refers to the practice of setting the initial with a layer of gold or silver. Have a look at the rest on Flickr here and here.
