What is the criteria for this award? ‘Liar’ is Justine Larbalestier’s fourth or fifth book.

Yes that’s a fair point. I wonder if they in fact intended that for Best Fiction? I can’t find any criteria on the website.

I think it’s just for first specifically ‘crime’ novel … which may or may not be a debut. Malcolm Knox won this category with PRIVATE MAN – which was his second novel, I think. Very exciting to be nominated – twice!

I do agree that the phrase ‘shortlist’ seems to be being used for longer and longer lists.
