MWF: Meanjin @Magazine this Saturday
JA
August 31
Meanjin is packing itself into a packing crate on Saturday and we’d love for you to join us!
Whether you’ve been overwhelmed by the sheer amount of choice from this year’s MWF, or perhaps missed out on some of your favourites, Magazine is a great way to enjoy a morning of short literary doses – the best of our winter and spring issues, and them some – within the comfy confines of a kitted out shipping container.
When: Saturday 4 Sept, 10am-1.15pm
Where: ‘The Cubby’, River Terrace, Fed Square (almost opposite BMW edge, along the Yarra). Go here for a venue map.
This is a FREE event.
10-10.15am. Meanjin: Drawn and Quartered
A quick grab from your friendly local literary: who we are, what we do and, most of all, how to get your foot in the door. Come along for tips, tricks and advice from the Meanjin team about the whys and hows of pitching and publishing.
10.30-10.45am. This is Not a Hobby
Encouraged, avoided, assured and ignored – such is the life of the emerging writer. Drawing on his essay in the June edition of Meanjin, Ben O’Mara talks with Jessica Au about the anxieties of going semi-pro; from grappling with the day job and freelance work, to reaching the heights of artistic wankery and, finally, finding joy in uncertainty.
11-11.15am. Adrian Hyland
Author Diamond Dove (which won the Ned Kelly Award for Best First Fiction) and Gunshot Road on synaesthesia in writing
11.30-11.45am. Watch This Space Pt 1
Introducing the best of new writing from our past two issues: Belinda Rule reads from ‘The Secret of the Dark Elves’.
12-12.15pm. Daren Shiau
Readings and a taste of interactive micro-fiction from the author of Heartland – the ‘definitive Singapore novel’ – and Velouria.
12.30-12.45pm. Unique and Deplorable
What happens when hardline policies collide with the best of Melbourne subculture – our bars, our laneways and our most iconic music venues? Join Michael Harden and Sophie Cunningham as they discuss the events that led to the temporary closure of the Tote last year, and his September essay on a history of deplorable drinking in Victoria.
1-1.15pm. Watch This Space Pt 2
Ruby Murray shares her Alan Marshall Short Story Prize winner, ‘The Things that Lucille Did’.
Change of date for The Amplified Author – Exploring New Business Models For Writers with Cory Doctorow
This session will now take place on MONDAY 6 SEPTEMBER, 5PM at the Wheeler Centre. (All existing ticket holders should contact the MWF Box Office on 9999 1199 with any queries).
The traditional publishing contract is still prized by many writers, but there are now lots of pathways for writers to build relationships with readers and get paid for it. Free content supported by donations or advertising, freemium, subscription, self-publishing and other models are all emerging alongside the old 10% royalty model. Are they viable?
Cory Doctorow will explore these concepts and host a discussion about possible futures for writers seeking a sustainable engagement with audiences. He’ll also be appearing at our Meanland Lecture on Thurs Sept 2.
