Meanland: Reading in a Time of Technology and SWF
JA
May 18
Folks, the second Meanland event, Reading in a Time of Technology kicks off tomorrow at the Wheeler Centre! This is a free event, but bookings are highly recommended (the last event sold out).
This time Meanland will focus on the ways in which technology, in place of books, can serve to deliver the narrative. Chris Meade, co-director of the Institute for the Future of the Book, discusses his own experiments with musical, graphical and digital fiction; the ANU’s Adrienne Nicotra explains how educational wikis might replace text books in the classroom; novelist and programmer Paul Callaghan demonstrates the role narrative plays in today’s computer games; and the poet/composer Klare Lanson explores the intersection of music and text.
Where: The Wheeler Centre, 176 Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.
When: Wed 19 May, 6.15-7.15pm
Also, for those in NSW, we have two Meanland events on at the Sydney Writers' Festival.
Let the Games Begin: The iPad, the Kindle and the iPhone
Passionate readers James Bradley, Sophie Cunningham and Sarah L’Estrange read Miles Franklin’s My Brilliant Career on a Kindle, iPad and iPhone respectively. They tell Jeff Sparrow all about it.
When: Friday 21 May 2010, 1-2pm
Where: Sydney Philharmonia Choir Studio, Pier 4/5, Hickson Road, Walsh Bay, Sydney.
This is a free event. Visit the festival website for the full program.
Can Literature Survive the Digital Age?
Are we so busy texting and tweeting that we no longer have time for the kind of contemplation that is necessary for great writing? Granta editor John Freeman (Shrinking the World) and novelist Cate Kennedy (The World Beneath) ponder a future where literature might not exist. Chaired by Sophie Cunningham.
When: Friday 21 May 2010, 4-5pm
Where: Sydney Theatre at Walsh Bay, 22 Hickson Road, Walsh Bay, Sydney.
Cost: $10/$15
Visit the festival website for bookings and the full program.
