I recently wrote a piece for my favourite web magazine, This Recording, about that most charming of literary sociopaths, Tom Ripley. For me, Tom Ripley is one of the most fascinating characters in crime fiction (in fiction of any kind really) and his creator, Patricia Highsmith, one of the most fascinating 20th century authors, and not only because she disliked almost everyone and kept snails as pets.

This Recording publish writing across a staggeringly broad range of topics and you can easily loose hours on the site. My particular favourites are their series of television recaps, which cover cultural theory, gender politics, current events as well as just being extremely funny and insightful about the shows they cover. Currently they’re following HBO fantasy epic Game of Thrones in weekly recaps written by ‘Dick Cheney’ (who previously followed Lost for the site). Add them to your bookmarks, you won’t regret it.

I also think the film adaptation of The Talented Mr Ripley, by Anthony Minghella, is a really under appreciated movie. The Ripley character is so conflicted, and gets himself in so deep, that it makes his murders seem so god damn rational.

I haven’t read the book, and will do now. Great article.

Oh and yes, This Recording is fine, very fine.

Hi Mark, I’m think I’m largely biased against the film because they change the ending of the novel so massively. If I’d never read it I would probably enjoy it quite a lot. Always the way!

Glad you enjoyed the article. There just isn’t enough advocating for financially motivated murder, I always say.
