Graphic Fantastic: Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes
JA
August 12
Even though they are ‘a mere blip in the actual production process’, these designs from illustrator and screen printer Nicholas Saunders from the set of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince are truly amazing. Saunders spent four months kitting out the products for Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, Fred and George’s extravagant joke shop in J.K Rowling’s novels. Fans will remember the descriptions of Extendable Ears, Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder, Patented Day-Dream Charms, U-NO-POO and Pygmy Puffs from the books. Saunders and the team came up with a few more themselves:
My first task was to come up with the names for the products that would adorn the shelves of the shop, for instance ‘Shimmering Silver Salt Drops’. Then the next stage was to cover a series of boxes and containers with labels created from the initial names… When the boxes were ready they were printed on mass up to 400... Then after this stage the set dressers took them to fill three storeys of shop shelves in the shop on the Diagon Alley set.
I love the vintage fairground/old school toyshop feel of these designs. It’s strange to think that all that work probably amounted to less than a minute of on-screen time, though I suppose that means that no one would have spotted the grammarfail in ‘Quality Weasley Good’s’.
