Dumb journal
May 01
As Overland's blog pointed out this morning, the home page of Quadrant at the moment is highly offensive. It runs, as a joke, a You Tube clip called ‘Dumb blonde: are you smarter than a fifth grader’ and suggests it's found the new editor for the Monthly. In general the gender politics of the whole debate surrounding Warhaft's departure from the Monthly have been gob smacking. Caroline Overington wrote a piece sympathetic to Warhaft, but still described her as a 'tall willowy blonde' in the Australian. Morrie Schwartz has been quoted in several papers as saying that Warhaft is 'brittle' and generally difficult to work with - men's behaviour in the workplace is never discussed in these terms. Yesterday Robert Manne was in Crikey describing how overwhelmed Warhaft became in the job - the suggestion being she wasn't coping rather than that - as appears to be the case - the Monthly was understaffed. But back to Quadrant: I do think a government funded journal needs to be held to some kind of standard (well, so artists are being told in this Post-Henson scandal age). This slips well under a standard that I can imagine any people would find acceptable. Indeed, it is revolting.

Very well said.

Couldn't agree more. The whole media reportage has been fascinating, and not in a good way.

I find this extremely disheartening -- it could never be said that I'm Quadrant's biggest fan, but this is closer to what I'd expect to see from Zoo Weekly.

It's also worthwhile noting that Overington herself isn't taken seriously. Today on Facebook, someone was commenting that around the newsroom she's generally known as "Ovaries".

In it something is. Many thanks for the help in this question. I did not know it.
