Charlie Quartpot

April 24

Giant aboriginal man statue

There were many times on my recent trip to the Northern Territory when I felt out of my depth - very 'city' if you like. Take these statues. I was very disturbed by Charlie Quartpot (you'll find them 80 km north of Alice Springs) and his recently built partner and child. The sculptures were designed and built by Mark Egan, the son of former Territory administrator, Ted Egan. Charlie Quartpot was unveiled in 2005. He's 17 metres high and the Anmatjere people have named him after Charlie Quartpot - a rainmaker who once lived in this area. It seems the Anmatjere people don't have the same problem with the statues that I do which leaves me not quite knowing what to think - but my queasiness is not allayed by Aileron Roadhouse owner, Greg Dick's, statement that, 'A big Hereford bull or something that wouldn't look right. And yet the man turns out to be the picture and plus it suits the country.'
