Beautifully Banal

Beautifully Banal is project orchestrated by the Type Directors Club in partnership with Cardon Copy. According to the website, they asked various designers to find a classified ad in their local newspaper and ‘hijack’ it typographically – in other words redesign it as a once-off collectible poster.
The results, and the play on words/images, are really something. I especially love this one for ‘Poodle pups T-cup/toy all colours shots registered’, re-imagined by Tina Roth Eisenberg.
This one for a personal classified ‘hijacked’ by Matthias Ernstbergeris great too – especially when viewed alongside the original: ‘SWEPT AWAY: Let a Sexy Sultry Italian take you into a world of sensuality & relaxation that will take your breath away. I love what I do.’
Also in non-designed related advertising funnies, have a look at this ad from 1886 found via Rumpus. The copy reads: "Cocoaine: It Kills Dandruff, promotes Growth of Hair, cures Scald Head."

This is a great idea. On a similar note, Chip Kidd’s novel, The Learners, includes an episode in which the protagonist designs and typesets a classified ad (looking for volunteers for an experiment), in which the logic of his design choices is part of the story.
