A Journey Round My Skull: Collected Illustrations

If ever you had an unhealthy fetish for beautiful book illustrations this blog, A Journey Round My Skull, is likely to blow your retinas. What I love about this site is that there’s a deft mix of both vintage and contemporary art from a broad cultural spectrum. This is stuff not commonly seen – weird, wacky and gut-wrenchingly good. Indeed there is so much to draw your attention to here, I hardly know where to start. A few samples are below, but check out the blog itself because it is certainly worthwhile.
A piece from Norwegian artist Are Mokkelbost, from his new series ‘Entity’. These collages are made from hand-drawn images cut from children’s books. In the artist’s own words: ‘bits and pieces of pedagogic images cluster and form living creatures, where anything that defines a living entity, such as eyes and limbs, originally depicted something else’. The backgrounds are created through water colour and gouache. Go here for more. You can also view Mokkelbost's other work at b-o-r-g.org

Jiri Trnka (1912-1969), a Czech artist and children’s book illustrator. Image from Andersen's Fairy Tales, 1959. Go here for more.
Image from 1920s Spanish comic series Pinocho Contra Chapete by Salvador Bartolozzi (1882-1950). Go here for more.
Slovakian book cover of Dora Alonsová’s Modrý pohonič by Alžbeta Štefunková-Szabová, 1979. Go here for more.
Japanese ukiyo-e style woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861). Go here for more.
