Dorothy Porter Poetry Prize, 2009
June 16
Meanjin is pleased to announce the inaugural Dorothy Porter Prize for Poetry. This annual prize will pay tribute to the much-loved Australian poet and her legacy of work.
A cash prize of $1000 will go to the best poem published in Meanjin in 2009. The judges are Andrea Goldsmith and Kristin Henry and the winning entry will be announced by the Meanjin poetry editor, Judith Beveridge, in the December edition of Meanjin: ‘Although Dorothy lost her battle with cancer and is sadly missed, her poetry, lively presence and energy continue to inspire many people. Meanjin is proud to be able to run this prize in her memory.’
Goldsmith, whose most recent novel is Reunion, is the author of five books. Kristin Henry, a fellow Melbourne poet, has published four collections of poetry and was short-listed for the NSW Premiers Award for What if the Plane Goes Down in 1996.
Dorothy Porter was one of Australia’s finest writers – two of her verse novels, What a Piece of Work and Wild Surmise, were short-listed for the Miles Franklin Award – Wild Surmise alongside partner Goldsmith’s novel, The Prosperous Thief. Porter also wrote two libretti for composer Jonathan Mills, The Ghost Wife and The Eternity Man, and her most recent publication El Dorado was short-listed for the Prime Minister’s Award. Porter and Goldsmith were partners for 14 years and lived together in Melbourne until Porter’s death last December.
The prize is co-sponsored by Porter’s agent,Jenny Darling: 'It was my privilege to work with Dorothy for 15 years. She was always enthusiastic, always optimistic and she would be proud to have this prize awarded in her honour.'

Only aware of Porter's writings over the past 2 years but her strength and sensuality have made her a constant companion.

As a student who in 2008 wrote her HSC Major Work on Dorothy Porter's verse novels, I am very pleased to see that Meanjin will be memorialising Dorothy's legacy in this way. Her poetry is risqué, poignant and inspiring.
